As the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law in the United States, it explicitly preserved the FDA’s authority over hemp products. Hemp (and the compounds derived from it) now falls under the same requirements and regulations as any other product within the categories of foods, dietary supplements, human and veterinary drugs, and cosmetics.

While some governments are behind the U.S. in legalizing the use of CBD products derived from hemp, it’s likely that the reality painted by the 2018 Farm Bill will be echoed across jurisdictions throughout the world. This has created a serious roadblock in bringing these products to the mainstream and inspiring trust amongst users.

Government regulation and research must be coupled with cooperation and collaboration with hemp cultivators, CBD product brands, biotechnology companies, and consumers to ensure products hitting the shelves are safe and beneficial for human use.
