Understanding CBD Distillate and its Uses
Where does CBD distillate come from?
CBD distillate is extracted from hemp plants. Hemp biomass (cultivated hemp plants) is ground down and run through an extraction process to pull oil from the plant that contains desirable compounds. This distilled oil can then be used in a variety of CBD products, or it can be further refined to isolate compounds to treat specific ailments and conditions.
The extraction process is highly technical and requires lots of time and funding to source the right equipment, construct the lab, get certified from local AHJs (Authority Having Jurisdictions), hire and train staff, and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Not surprisingly, higher-quality CBD distillate creates higher-quality products. In recent years, companies in the extraction industry have refined new technologies, processes, and business models to ensure that the quality of distillate found across the industry continues to improve. The extraction process and technology in the lab are both equally as important as the quality of the hemp biomass when it comes to creating high-quality CBD distillate.

A recent study found that distillation improves cannabinoid profile. Distilled hemp biomass was found to have over 3 times more CBD compared to non distilled samples.

Demand for CBD Products
Since the FDA removed hemp from the definition of marijuana as a Schedule I substance in 2018, new drugs and supplements are flooding the market to help treat people suffering from a variety of illnesses and ailments.
“FDA has seen CBD appear in a wide variety of products including foods, dietary supplements, veterinary products, and cosmetics. As this new market emerges, we have seen substantial interest from industry, consumers, and Congress.”
Increased popularity and awareness of the health benefits of CBD oil is changing the way people look at this once taboo plant, and an exciting new industry has begun to bloom. “The global cannabidiol [CBD] market size is expected to reach USD $13.4 billion by 2028. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR [Compound Annual Growth Rate] of 21.2% from 2021 to 2028.” This industry growth is fueled in part by innovation in CBD products and distillate extraction.
